Management Theories
- Theory X: Managers believe that employees will work only if rewarded with benefits or threatened with punishment
- Think employees are extrinsically motivated
- only interested in Maslow's lower needs
- Theory Y: Managers believe that employees are internally motivated to do good workand policies should encourage this internal motive
- Interested in Maslow's higher needs
If your motivation for becoming like a doctor that pays about $600/hr, that would be extrinsic motivation; your reason for becoming a doctor is external to you. If your motivation is that you enjoy the thrill of this profession (rushing into ERS, researching diseases, saving lives, finding a cure, etc.), that would be intrinsic. As you can see, intrinsic motivation are better in the sense that they are not dependent on someone or something.
