-what motivates us to work?

Intrinsic Motivators
-Rewards we get internally, such as enjoyment or satisfaction

Extrinsic Motivators
-Rewards that we get for accomplishments from outside ourselves (grades, pay raise, etc.)

Management Theories
  • Theory X: Managers believe that employees will work only if rewarded with benefits or threatened with punishment 
    • Think employees are extrinsically motivated
    • only interested in Maslow's lower needs
  • Theory Y: Managers believe that employees are internally motivated to do good workand policies   should encourage this internal motive
    • Interested in Maslow's higher needs

  1. If your motivation for becoming like a doctor that pays about $600/hr, that would be extrinsic motivation; your reason for becoming a doctor is external to you. If your motivation is that you enjoy the thrill of this profession (rushing into ERS, researching diseases, saving lives, finding a cure, etc.), that would be intrinsic. As you can see, intrinsic motivation are better in the sense that they are not dependent on someone or something.
